It wasn't all that long ago that Candidate Donald Trump promised to "drain the swamp" in Washington of incompetent and dishonest political hacks and cronies and hire only the "best and brightest" to fill out his administration.
How has that worked out?
Trump's latest hiring fiasco involves former White House advisor Omarosa Manigault Newman, who has written a tell-all book in which she accuses the president of using the "N-word", of trying to eat a paper containing possibly incriminating evidence, and a host of other horrible accusations.
Trump's response?
Well, if she was such a dog, why did he hire her in the first place? Seems like a logical question to me.
The litany of people that Trump hired for his administration and then who were fired or replaced has been recounted in the media many times over.
The EPA's Scott Pruitt, a major Trump suck-up, was fired after story after story emerged about his abusive and wasteful practices.
The guy first picked to run the Veterans Administration was run out of town after similar activities were disclosed. His first press secretary was a bold faced liar and so incompetent that Trump finally gave him the axe.
His attorney general? Virtually every day Trump belittles Jeff Sessions, angry because he recused himself from the Robert Mueller investigation and so has not shut it down.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Indeed, instead of draining the swamp, Trump has done just the opposite.
As this Washington Post article by Paul Waldman points out, in 2016 during the campaign, Trump said:
"You need people that are truly, truly capable. And I think so much has to do with past history: how have they done, how has it all worked out, you understand what I mean by that perhaps better than anybody. And we have to get the best people. … We need to get the best and the finest, and if we don’t we’ll be in trouble for a long period of time, and maybe never come out of it."
Looks like he was right on that score.
