'Resistance' Inside the Trump Administration

President Trump makes "reckless decisions that have to be walked back," a senior administration official writes.

Coming on the heels of revelations from The Washington Post's Bob Woodward's new book, "Fear," about the Trump presidency, an anonymous op-ed article by a senior Trump administration official in The New York Times today discloses concerted efforts to sidetrack presidential actions that would harm the American people and the nation.

"I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations," the official wrote.

"The root of the problem is the president’s amorality," the official explained. "Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making."

The official said the situation is so bad that members of Trump's cabinet briefly considered trying to invoke the 25th Amendment, which provides for replacing the president with the vice president in the event the president is incapacitated and unable to perform his duties.

However, they decided not to do that to avoid a "constitutional crisis" in the country.

"From the White House to executive branch departments and agencies, senior officials will privately admit their daily disbelief at the commander in chief’s comments and actions. Most are working to insulate their operations from his whims." the official wrote.

"Meetings with him veer off topic and off the rails, he engages in repetitive rants, and his impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back."

The official added, "It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room. We fully recognize what is happening. And we are trying to do what’s right even when Donald Trump won’t."

The editorial is remarkable and shocking, and combined with the revelations of Woodward's book, raises the ante on Republicans who control Congress and who simply must face the fact that their party has been usurped by an unhinged, dangerous lunatic -- just as we all must face up to the fact that he is the elected president of our country.

The Trump administration official concluded, "There is a quiet resistance within the administration of people choosing to put country first. But the real difference will be made by everyday citizens rising above politics, reaching across the aisle and resolving to shed the labels in favor of a single one: Americans."
