Was Lindsey Graham Auditioning to Replace Sessions?

Yesterday, during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination, Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) launched into an emotional, angry defense of the judge, accusing Democrats of trying to destroy Kavanaugh's life to block his confirmation hoping to fill the seat after the 2020 election.

The hearing, ranted Graham, was “the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics.”

Graham's defense of the nominee was met with enthusiastic approval by Trump, who reportedly had been disheartened after the entirely believable testimony of Kavanaugh's accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. He reportedly then came to life after Kavanaugh, in near rage, forcefully defended himself saying the charges were cooked up by Democrats who were angry over Trump's election.

As I watched Graham, I couldn't help but contrast his performance with that of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has been on Trump's s--t list since he recused himself from the Mueller Russia investigation, and who Trump has publicly humiliated as being weak and virtually useless.

Trump apparently sees the attorney general as his own personal attorney and police force all rolled into one, and he can't stand the idea that Sessions, who looks a bit like Mr. Peepers, won't kowtow to his every whim. It has been rumored that Sessions will be replaced, probably after the mid-term elections.

On the other hand, Graham, who ran for the GOP nomination for president against Trump and many other candidates, and who forcefully attacked Trump on the stump, has now moved much closer to the president to the point of becoming a golfing buddy and confidant. Recently, he said Trump deserves an attorney general "he has faith in."

Following yesterday's performance at the Kavanaugh hearing, Graham's performance was cheered by the White House and its sycophants in the media. Here's how Vox reported it:

If this (gaining Trump's approval) was what he was trying to do, it certainly seemed to work. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders praised his “decency and courage,” and added, “God bless him.”

(Fox News' Sean) Hannity gushed, “I don’t think you’ve ever had a more powerful moment in your career.”

Rudy Giuliani said Graham had “distinguished himself” as “the fairest man and the best lawyer in Washington.”

Eric Trump tweeted, “You were truly incredible today.”

Does Graham want to be attorney general? I wouldn't be surprised if he does. Was this an audition for the AG job? If not, it didn't hurt, if that is Graham's ambition.
