The blogs of Not Fake News offer a running contemporary history of developments large and small that happen in our world, often focusing on major national issues, but many times on stories that strike at our sense of humanity or are simply entertaining.
Our Not Fake News readership has steadily grown over 2019, and for that we are grateful. The contributions of our roster of contributing writers has significantly contributed to this growth, a fact that as founder and editor-in-chief, I am immensely proud.
But most important are our readers here in the U.S. and many countries abroad who are the power behind Not Fake News.
Here are the year's top 10 stories based on Google-documented page views:
1. The Waccamaw Indians: The Invisible People -- Oct. 17, 968 page views
Once a proud people in South Carolina, peaceful people who farmed, worked their gardens, and trod their pathways long before the days of Christopher Columbus, the Waccamaw Indian People today have all but faded away.
But Chief Harold "Buster" Hatcher is fighting with every last breath to make certain that does not happen and to preserve their heritage, even though he and many of the 600 known Waccamaws in the Palmetto State feel all but invisible.
2. White Power Hate -- August 7, 347 page views
Last night about 30 people held a quiet vigil in a Myrtle Beach, SC park in honor of the El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH mass shooting victims over the weekend.
As they prepared to read aloud the names of those who died, a car drove by and a man yelled out, "White power!" Then, they made another pass and someone yelled, "You won't take our guns."
3. #RedShirtGuy, Racism & Beto O'Rourke -- August 28, 294 page views
Tuesday night at an appearance at a brew pub in Florence, SC, a Donald Trump supporter asked Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke how he knew Trump is a racist, "without any evidence..."
And so was born #RedShirtGuy, now trending on Twitter.
The Trumper, rather haltingly, asked O'Rourke what evidence he actually had that Trump is a racist, sending #RedShirtGuy -- Brandon Counts -- into a fit of laughter. As the Trumper continued to ask his question, spouting Trump's claims about how great he's made it for African Americans and Hispanics, Counts wearing a bright red shirt, simply threw his head back and guffawed.
4. Tic Tacs, Orange Makeup and Illegal Workers -- December 5, 188 page views
For years Donald Trump has employed dozens of undocumented workers at his resorts and golf clubs, and now because some are fed up, we know about his passion for Tic Tacs and rust-colored face makeup from Switzerland -- and a lot more.
5. Snowflakes: How to Defeat Trumpers Every Time - December 28, 152 page views
It’s that time of year again. Families are gathering to celebrate this joyous season. And then there is your crazy uncle BillyBob.
He comes to dinner wearing his red MAGA hat, all set to take on any and all challenges thanks to a Christmas “gift” to Donald Trump’s supporters with the website How to Win an Argument with Your Liberal Relatives.
Here are some clues on how to counter the distorted “logic” presented by that one person, like Uncle Billybob, who has gone off his meds.
6. What Will You Do to Stop School Shootings? -- August 6, 140 page views
Today, a 10-year-old boy took a microphone, looked the United States Senator and presidential candidate straight in the eye and asked what he would do to stop shootings in schools that have cost so many lives and caused so much terror.
The boy's name is Elijah Lawson, and the candidate he was addressing was Sen. Cory Booker, who had come to the Bucksport Senior Center near Conway, SC, to address residents of South Carolina.
7. Time for a Break: Stupid Criminals -- July 22, 133 page views
This week is probably going to be filled with more nasty news, what with Trump still complaining about "the Squad" and Robert Mueller finally testifying before Congress, so I thought a little break in the mood would be appropriate.
Enter: Stupid Criminals
8. The Laughing Stock Buffoon -- December 4, 132 page views
So President Trump became the butt of jokes between top world leaders at the NATO summit near London, prompting him to stalk away and start calling people names.
Wasn't it Trump who said in a 2014 tweet that "We need a President who isn't a laughing stock to the entire world?" In that tweet, he added, "We need a truly great leader, a genius at strategy and winning. Respect!"
Well, la de da.
9. Trump, the Would-be Dictator -- August 23, 126 page views
This morning Donald J. Trump, the reality show president, posted a notice on Facebook and on his favorite, channel, Twitter, that American companies "are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China, including bringing your companies HOME and making your products in the USA."
Since when can the president of the United States ORDER American companies to do his bidding? Where does that come from? What authority?
10. Dear Abby -- September 5, 113 page views
Dear Abby gets a lot of crazy questions and requests. Here are some, sent to me by my friend Hermey Schlesinger, that I thought I'd relay to you as we wait out Hurricane Dorian here in Myrtle Beach, SC.
A little levity never hurts, even in the eye of a hurricane! Of course, we're not in the eye, but it is getting too close for comfort!
What does all of this tell us about 2019? According to Not Fake News readers, they really care about the plight of Native Americans, they mostly think Trump is a dangerous moron, they're concerned about racism and hate, they want school shootings stopped, and they like to laugh.
Pretty good people, if you ask me.
Thanks for a great 2019...we'll be back at ya next year!
