Confronting Outrage: A Conversation on Media and Polarization

Politicians and the media both contribute to political polarization today.

Confronting Outrage: A Conversation on Media and Polarization

Are you fed up with the constant outrage that seems to be prevalent in the media these days when it comes to the state of our nation? In today's polarized world, media outrage is a significant factor contributing to the political and social polarization we witness daily.

This episode of the Lean to the Left podcast dives deep into this issue with guest David Beckemeyer, a tech veteran, investor, and host of the Outrage Overload podcast.

Understanding Media Outrage

Conservative media outlets like Breitbart and Fox News often link Democrats to exaggerated left-wing ideas, while progressive media like MSNBC wastes no time calling out Republicans and Trump for their right-wing extremism. This cyclical outrage contributes to the toxic polarization we all experience nearly every day.

Meet David Beckemeyer

David Beckemeyer has over 25 years of experience in the San Francisco Bay Area tech scene, including a role as the founding CTO of Earthlink. He now dedicates his time to science communication, hosting the Outrage Overload podcast. The show explores the pervasive impact of outrage in society and politics with leading experts.

David introduces the term 'outrage porn,' referring to material designed to evoke anger, disgust, or indignation online. The term, first used at the New York Times, primarily applies to social media, but extends to TV news, political campaigns, and even personal conversations among friends.

He explains how the media and our social circles perpetuate outrage, creating a cycle of continuous indignation and stress.

What is 'Outrage Overload'?

Outrage isn't inherently bad. There are things we should feel outraged about. However, the relentless stream of high-stress news turns our outrage dial up to 11, leading to a state David dubs 'outrage overload.' This state of perpetual anger and tension renders outrage ineffective as a tool for meaningful activation and causes significant stress and anxiety.

David emphasizes the need to combat the outrage media that fuels toxic polarization. Progressives, he suggests, should start by checking their side of the narrative and seeking alternative news sources when needed. Sometimes, it’s even beneficial to turn off the news altogether. It's crucial to remain informed without becoming overly reactionary or entrenched in one's views.

Engaging in Constructive Conversations

David notes that arranged discussions, like those by Braver Angels, Living Room Conversations, and Crossing Party Lines, offer environments for respectful dialogues between differing views.

These conversations allow participants to see that people on the other side aren't necessarily terrible and may share many of the same worries and values.

Discussing his experiences interviewing scientists and experts, David reveals how media manipulation and partisan rhetoric perpetuate a vicious cycle of polarization. This cycle convinces people that the other side is not just wrong but morally wrong, which justifies extreme actions and furthers divisions.

Does focusing too much on polarization distract from addressing systemic issues? David suggests that while it's essential to be aware of polarization, advocates should focus on realistic, substantive change rather than catastrophizing every situation.

About the Outrage Overload Podcast

David's Outrage Overload podcast delves into the science of outrage in society and politics. It features interviews with scientists, social psychologists, political experts, and bridge-building practitioners. The platform aims to help people understand media's impact better and find ways to lower societal temperatures while staying civically engaged, he explains.

David encourages listeners to engage in open, respectful conversations, realize the importance of pragmatic empathy, and remain critically aware of the narratives they're absorbing. The goal isn't to abandon one's values but to approach differences with understanding and constructive dialogue.
