Crusade Against a Deadly Rare Cancer

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

There’s a rare, deadly cancer that not many people know about. It’s called Cholangiocarcinoma. We learn a lot about that in this episode of The Lean to the Left Podcast from a father who lost his daughter to this disease, and from a patient who continues in a fight for her life.

Last summer Dave Fleischer crisscrossed America to draw attention to the battle against the rare and deadly cancer, Cholangiocarcinoma, which claimed the life of his daughter, Sarah, at age 35.

On his trip, supported by the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, Fleischer visited hospitals and healthcare institutions that specialize in research and treatment of the disease, and met with patients, caregivers and healthcare providers who were important in Sarah's life.

One of those patients, known as Warriors, with whom Dave met was Janice Meyer, who has been battling the deadly bile duct cancer since her diagnosis in 2018. Janice also is with us today and shares the story of her battle against the disease and her efforts to raise awareness about the need for research to find medications to help patients and, eventually, a cure.

One of her initiatives is the 3rd Annual Quack Out Cholangio 5k to Crush Bile Duct Cancer, to be held May 14, 2022 at Midnight Oil Brewery, 674 Pencader Dr., Newark, DE 19702. Participation fee is $25 for those who register by April 14. The fee until May 12 is $30, and $35 the day of the race. More info.

February is Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month and Feb. 12 is World Cholangiocarcinoma Day, and so I invited Dave and Janice to discuss the ongoing battle to find a cure for what is now considered a terminal disease.

Take a listen.
