The impeachment "stunt" led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), accusing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of refusing to comply with federal immigration laws and breach of public trust, only passed the House by a single vote, 214 to 213.
That single vote margin was made possible by the support of Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who represents Georgia's gerrymandered Republican 11th district and who issued the following statement using taxpayer funds after voting in support of Mayorkas' impeachment:
"This impeachment vote follows a nearly yearlong investigation conducted by the House Homeland Security Committee, which found that Secretary Mayorkas is “chiefly responsible for the chaos and devastation that has unfolded over the past three years” at America’s borders.
The Height of Hypocrisy
Loudermilk's impeachment vote was the height of hypocrisy considering that on January 5, 2021, he gave a tour of the U.S. Capitol, allowing participants an opportunity to scope out the building in advance of the attack, thus jeopardizing the security of the Capitol itself. He declined an interview request from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection after video showing him giving that tour of the Capitol before the Trump-spawned insurrection attempt occurred.
Loudermilk rarely holds town halls nor does he engage with constituents who do not agree with his extreme rightwing politics. Recently Democrat Antonio Daza, who got just over 37 perecent of the vote in the district in 2022, bowed out of a rematch in 2024. It is noted that Daza accomplished this while raising around 5 percent for his campaign vs what Loudermilk did.
Loudermilk's election was the result of years of precision gerrymandering by the Republican party, where they can place zombie candidates in safe red districts that just collect campaign donations from special interests and corporate donors, rinse, and repeat every two years. Loudermilk even removed the phone numbers that are paid for with taxpayer dollars from his website for a short time with no explanation.
Past fiascos when Loudermilk tried to interact with his constituents led to his complete embarrassment, admitting that he did not vaccinate his children and campaigning with accused child molester Josh Duggar under the alleged umbrella of religion.
Because districts like this are not focused on by mainstream media, it is unknown if Loudermilk will have a challenger in 2024. Our guess is that he will probably be sent back as a zombie candidate for more years of the same mediocre representation.
Clearly, our system of drawing district lines is in serious need of an update, as Loudermilk's "representation" demonstrates. In fact, he and others who gave such tours in advance of the January 6 attack should, themselves, be impeached.
