Bombs and Today's Explosive Environment of Fear and Hate

The result of Trump's effort to foster fear and hate to gain political support.

The White House wasted no time today in condemning the actions of the would-be bomber who sent apparent explosive devices addressed to the homes of former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and liberal billionaire George Soros.

The statement came minutes before it was revealed that a fourth device was sent to CNN headquarters in New York. The return address on the envelopes was that of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, whose office was later evacuated by authorities.

The comment came in a Tweet by Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that "these terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

But what about Trump himself?

It took him several hours to offer this statement to the media: “In these times, we have to unify," he said. "We have to come together and send one very clear, strong and unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.”

Before that, he worked on whipping up his base in his own Tweets stoking fears of immigration.

"We are a great Sovereign Nation," he wrote. "we have Strong Borders and will never accept people coming into our Country illegally! For those who want and advocate for illegal immigration, just take a good look at what has happened to Europe over the last 5 years. A total mess! They only wish they had that decision to make over again."

Trump has spent the last several days America in Tweets and at rallies warning of the dangers posed by the "caravan" of refugees from Honduras who are slowly walking towards the U.S border hoping to seek asylum. He's claimed, admittedly without evidence, that they have been infiltrated by "Middle Easterners" and criminals.

In fact, in a campaign speech in Montana -- the same one where he complimented a Republican Congressman who bodyslammed a reporter -- Trump blamed Soros, without facts, for funding the caravan.

It's a concerted tactic by Trump, now being picked up by Vice President Pence and other Republicans in advance of the November 6 election, to stoke fear and anger among Republican supporters, desperately trying to counteract expected Congressional losses to Democratic candidates.

Trump cannot succeed without hate and anger. It is his playbook. As a result, we now live in an age where hate and violence have been not only condoned, but encouraged by the President of the United States.

It is that atmosphere of fear and hate, created and perpetrated by Trump and his Republican followers in positions of power, that leads to the actions of such a deranged individual, or individuals, who would attempt to send bombs through the mail to people they hate.

Is that how he is making America great again? Is that the kind of country we have become?
