Can You Believe it? Oreos are Attacking Our Kids!

Time to go out and buy some Oreos.

A right wing organization called One Million Moms has launched a campaign to boycott Oreo cookies because the parent company, Mondelez International, is airing a Gay Pride commercial to encourage moms and dads to be accepting when their child comes out.

The commercial promotes Rainbow Oreos filled with cream in the colors of the Pride flag in a marketing campaign with the nonprofit PFLAG, which supports parents, families and allies of LGBTQ people.

Can you believe it? What is this world coming too? Special Oreos for gay people?

Now you need to understand that One Million Moms is in no way connected with the Million Mom March gun safety organization, far from it. It is an online ministry of the American Family Association, a conservative "pro-family" organization. According to its website, One Million Moms is determined "to stop the exploitation of our children, especially by the entertainment media (TV, music, movies, etc.)."

It tells mothers, "Mom, OneMillionMoms.com is the most powerful tool you have to stand against the immorality, violence, vulgarity and profanity the entertainment media is throwing at your children."

And so, it has decided that attacking Oreos and Mondelez International would be a good way to do that.

On its website, One Million Moms says by creating and promoting the Rainbow Oreos, Mondelez International "is attempting to normalize the LGBTQ lifestyle by using their commercials, such as the most recent Oreo ad featuring a lesbian couple, to brainwash children and adults alike by desensitizing audiences."

If you read their description of the offending commercial, you will immediately realize just how harmful it is:

"The ad has a daughter going home to see her family and brings her lesbian lover with her. The commercial focuses on the mother approving of her daughter’s girlfriend, but the father is hesitant and has reservations. He later has a change of heart and even displays his acceptance of her lifestyle by painting his picket fence in rainbow colors to further show his approval. The advertisement ends with: “A loving world starts with a loving home.” Followed by: “Show you’re a proud parent #PROUDPARENT.” And the final statement: “In collaboration with PFLAG. Oreoproudparent.com.”

My God, that is horrible!

In its description of the ad, entitled "Proud Parent," Mondelez says, "The film shows the love between Jen and Amy, exploring parent-child relationships and the challenges of bringing a partner home for the first time – especially for the LGBTQ+ community. The film highlights the true importance of family love, support, and affirmation."

How dare they!

Well, One Million Moms explains why they are so upset about these Oreos:

"It is obvious they are going after our children in a dangerous partnership with PFLAG."

And so, the organization issues this warning:

"When we purchase Mondelez International products then we are helping fund and support PFLAG. In 2011, the popular snack-food company Nabisco became known as Mondelez International. Its most popular brands in the United States are Oreo, belVita, Chips Ahoy!, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Honey Maid, Halls, Philadelphia, Ritz, Sour Patch Kids, Triscuit, Trident gum, and Wheat Thins."

OK, folks, not only shouldn't you buy Oreos, you'd better stay away from all of those other brands, too, because all they are doing is attacking our kids.

By the way, as this was written, 17,430 people had signed One Million Moms' petition. I bet I know who they're voting for...

UPDATE: I went out this afternoon and bought TWO family packs of Oreos. One dark chocolate, and one regular. Couldn't find the Rainbow Oreos. Anyway, I just ate six -- SIX -- in honor of all LGBTQ people and their parents. Here I am eating the first two! Man, I had forgotten how delicious Oreos are!

Here's an email just received from NFN reader Sue Hampker.

As the Mother of a gay son I saw that as well & could not believe it. It is like going to church & they say everyone is welcome unless your gay. How can people be so hurtful &  ignorant?

I can’t wait to check out your book.
